Having been a practicing psychologist and forensic examiner before changing his career path to the study and investigation of online users who engage in malevolent and nefarious activities, Dr. Nuccitelli fully understands that most sexual predators are typically close in age to the child victim and usually family members, friends or intimate partners of their victims. In essence, online sexual predators are from all walks of life and not bound by race, religion, heritage or socio-economic status.

Dr. Nuccitelli has stated, “I don’t think society at large truly understands the widespread growth of child pornography and online sexual predators trolling for child targets in cyberspace.”

Simply stated, Online Predators are sexual predators who use Information and Communications Technology and the Internet to locate, target and victimize minors. Common forums they use to target children include chat rooms, instant messaging or social networking sites for the purpose of flirting with and meeting others for illicit sexual experiences. Online Predators often are motivated to manipulate or “groom” a minor with the ultimate goal of meeting and engaging in sexual activity, despite knowing they are engaging in illegal activities.

In instances where meeting their victims is not the primary objective, Online Predators also attempt to persuade children and teens to participate in some form of online sexual and/or sexually provocative activity motivated by sexual deviance or for financial gain engaging in the distribution and sale of online child pornography.

Darkside of Cyberspace & Malevolent Online Behaviors

The Darkside of Cyberspace is a global concept  including all criminal, deviant, deceptive, harmful and malevolent activities in the abstract universe of cyberspace. Whereas iPredator involves criminal, deviant and harmful online activities, the Darkside of Cyberspace includes both legal and illegal activities, as well as, destructive and self-destructive behaviors. Dr. Nuccitelli has compiled the concepts he designed in his mission to create a framework termed, the Darkside of Cyberspace. Darkside of Cyberspace Webpage

As this writer continues to work on iPredator , iPredator Bridge [Dark Side of Cyberspace] and Dark Psychology [Hidden Realm of  Human Consciousness], the question of etiology and modus operandi related to evil remains elusive at best. Thousands of hours have been spent formulating these concepts with the next three-four decades to inevitably follow. It is no wonder why the fields of psychology, sociology, physiology and all religious dogmas have merely scratched the surface.

Researching ancient history, recent historical events, great philosophers, cosmology, quantum theory and religious interpretations; combined with this writer’s past clinical and forensic experiences, has led to his novice conclusions defining evil called iPredator, iPredator Bridge and Dark Psychology. Humanity is the apparent apex of all sentient beings on Earth and one would think the location, roots and mechanisms of nourishment for evil would be mapped and supported by global consensus. Immediately and always called to mind is if other apex creatures, inhabiting planets throughout the universe, experience this same conundrum.

Just as Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and other notable theoretical physicists have attempted to connect the “very large” (aka, cosmology) with the “very small”  (aka, quantum mechanics), this writer posits that these same principles occur within humanity as a whole and within the human mind.

In relationship to history, it is of little human value, nor relevant to this writer’s pursuits, to castigate or pass judgment on if and how past atrocities occurred. If one does not subscribe to the accuracy of recorded history, then there are many other venues to consider. For example, if concluding that the Holocaust or similar historical mass genocides are nonsense and propaganda, then consider the American born profiles of Ted Bundy, Richard RamirezJeffrey Dahmer and other prolific serial murderers as starting points. Whether attempting to succinctly interpret the motivations of Heinrich Himmler or Luis Garavito, the reality is that there resides within all humans a reservoir (aka, unconscious) from which malevolent desires are born, fed and coddled. These desires are fueled by progressively obsessive fantasies and a deviant attraction for power, control and domination.

Then comes along the historical and societal paradigm shift known as the Information Age, whereby technology and all internet enabled connected digital devices create the abstract and artificial illusory environment called cyberspace. It is within cyberspace, that this writer’s concepts of iPredator, iPredator Bridge and Dark Psychology merge into a proverbial “soup.” This writer has attempted to map this cyber convergence he has called 5PV. The primary difference between 5PV and all other criminal, deviant and abuse victimization models, used in its design, is the environment in which the interplay between predator and victim exchange occurs. This environment, which benefits iPredator, is cyberspace.

For the first time in human civilization, the abyss known as evil can be observed and witnessed with minimal effort within cyberspace. Unfortunately, what one sees with his or her eyes is not what is always accurately interpreted and imprinted within the unconscious. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the internet are brilliant designs of human invention. Cyberspace, the artificial environment accessed via electronic devices, is a remarkable engineering feat that has, and will continue to do so, change the very fabric of human consciousness and what it means to be community centric.

darkside-cyberspace-ipredator-page-released-michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-dark-psychology-ipredator-inc.-new-york

As an academic and philosophical disciple of Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Robert Hare, Philip Zimbardo and Stanton Samenow, this writer seeks to rely upon their visions to one day define why cyberspace is causing a cultural disconnectedness. Unknown at present, cyberspace has built within its structure a method for circumventing a person’s capacity to practice humility, charity, self-preservation and mutual respect for others. What this writer calls the “veil of anonymity” within cyberspace,  a new perceptual dimension has been created. Cyberspace is an artificial world that can accelerate a person’s unconscious desire to engage in criminal, deviant and immoral acts, even if it is not part of their genetic or environmental heritage.

This proverbial “digital depravity factor”  has already reared its ugly head evidenced by the rapid growth of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, online sexual predation, cybercrime and various other forms of online aggression and victimization. The explosion of online deception alone should cause communities to mobilize fearing an attack. The only iPredator typology not having come to fruition to date is cyber terrorism. Only time will tell if a major cyber terrorist event will target American soil within the next century. If humanity does not mobilize to implement a strategy stopping the societal disconnectedness this writer posits as growing, an optimal environment for cybercrime, online aggression and victimization are the inevitable outcomes.

“The desire to terminate life fuels the actions necessary to quench that desire’s thirst. The question remaining unanswered is from where does this desire hail and how did it get there, within the human mind, in the first place.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2006)

Cyberbullying & Dark Psychology by Dr. Nuccitelli

Dark Psychology & Cyberbullying

Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D.

A Brief Analysis

by Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D.

CEO, iPredator Inc.

Cyberbullying is defined as the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the commission of verbal and/or physical attacks, by one or more children towards another child, who is unable or unwilling to deescalate the engagement. Given that the vast majority of this abuse occurs in cyberspace, the factors, drives and motivations for cyberbullying are extremely complex. Provided below is a brief introduction to cyberbullying and the realm of Dark psychology.

Bullying, or classic bullying, is a term used to define recurrent and sustained verbal and/or physical attacks by one or more child(s) towards another child who is unable or unwilling to deescalate the engagement. It may involve verbal harassment, physical assault, coercion, intimidation, humiliation and taunting. Bullying is comprised of a combination of five types of pediatric abuse: social, sexual, emotional, verbal and physical. Bullying requires both the assailant and target to be minors. Adult forms of bullying are termed Harassment, Stalking & Slander. Despite variants in definition, bullying involves abuse between two or more minors. Classic bullying requires face- to-face interactions within the repertoire of aggressive behaviors.

Cyberbullying is a term used to define recurrent and sustained verbal and/or physical attacks, by one or more children towards another child, who is unable or unwilling to deescalate the engagement using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Like classic bullying, cyberbullying is harmful, repeated and hostile behavior intended to deprecate a targeted child. Cyberbullying describes threatening or disparaging communications delivered through ICT. Whereas classic bullying involves face-to-face interactions and non-digital forms of communication, cyberbullying consists of information exchanged via ICT and may never involve face- to-face encounters.

dark-psychology-cyberbullying-michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-dark-psychology-ipredator-inc.-new-york

By definition, classic & cyberbullying occurs among young people. When an adult is involved as the aggressor, it meets criteria for cyber harassment or cyberstalking, which in many states is a criminal act. Although the terms bullying and cyberbullying includes adult intimidation behavior in contemporary culture, these describe pediatric behaviors and will not include adult applications in this manuscript.

Children of the 21st century are targeted via classic bullying, cyberbullying or a combination of the two. Given the evolution of digital technology, growth of the internet and its relevance to the human experience, cyberbullying has reached epidemic proportions among the pediatric segments of society and becoming a permanent weapon in the toolbox of pediatric aggressors. At the core of all bullying, cyber and classic, are victimization, disparagement and abuse of a targeted child. Child abuse, whether perpetrated by a child or adult, is detrimental to all aspects of their psychological and developmental maturation following them into adulthood and throughout their lifespan.

Children traumatized by abuse and victimization have higher rates of all negative psychological and sociological aspects of the human condition ranging from alcohol & drug abuse, criminal involvement, domestic abuse and psychiatric illnesses. With the advent of ICT, children are by far more susceptible to the nefarious, criminal and deviant aspects ICT offers humanity. Although ICT offers incredible benefits to society, children are the demographic segment that is most impacted by the Dark Side of Cyberspace.

Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters. Steve Jobs (1955-2011)

In the United States, October has been marked every year as National Crime Prevention Month, National Bullying Prevention Month & National Cyber Security Month. Clearly, America has to recognize the adverse societal outcomes if cyberbullying is not addressed immediately. Given the complexity of cyberbullying, religious organizations, educational systems and communities must work together to initiate and sustain a concerted effort.

A Canadian educator, Bill Belsey, in 2008 coined the term, cyberbullying, defining it as, “involving the use of information and communication technologies such as e-mail, cell phone and pager text messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal websites, and defamatory online personal polling websites, to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.” Since introducing this term, cyberbullying now includes all ICT and has flourished to all industrialized nations. Because of this alarming reality and projected negative societal impact, if not addressed, this writer will analyze cyberbullying from his theoretical concepts of Dark Psychology & iPredator.

 Dark Psychology

Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of humanity’s potential to prey upon others. Motivating this potential are criminal and/or deviant drives that lack purpose and cannot be explained by evolutionary instinctual drives and social sciences theory. All of humanity has this potential to victimize other humans and living creatures. While most restrain or sublimate this tendency, some act upon these impulses.

Dark Psychology seeks to understand those thoughts, feelings, behaviors, phenomenological and subjective processing systems that lead to predatory behavior that is antithetical to contemporary understandings of human behavior. Dark Psychology assumes that criminal, deviant and abusive behaviors are purposive and have some rational, goal-oriented motivation 99% of the time. It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Adlerian theory and Teleology. Dark Psychology postulates there is a realm within the human psyche that enables some people to commit atrocious acts without purpose. The contingent of humanity that uses ICT to harm and victimize others has been coined iPredator, which Dark Psychology also investigates.

iPredator is a new construct developed by this writer to describe those, children and adults, who use ICT to assault, victimize and steal from others. Based on this writer’s hypothesis, 80-85% of cyberbullies meets the requirements of iPredator and defined as follows:

Sociopathy, iPredator & Dark Psychology Definitions

sociopathy-ipredator-dark-psychology-michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-forensic-psychology-ipredator-inc.

iPredator Equals Dark Side of Cyberspace

Dark Psychology and iPredator are two psychodynamic and criminology constructs developed by NYS licensed psychologist and forensic psychology consultant, Michael Nuccitelli Psy.D. Provided for interested parties below is Dr. Nuccitelli’s recently updated definitions. Dr. Nuccitelli is always receptive to discuss his two constructs and can be reached at drnucc@ipredatorinc.com or 347-871-2416.

2013 Formal Dark Psychology Definition

Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of people to prey upon other people motivated by criminal and/or deviant drives that lack purpose and general assumptions of instinctual drives and social sciences theory. All of humanity has the potentiality to victimize humans and other living creatures. While many restrain or sublimate this tendency, some act upon these impulses.

Dark Psychology seeks to understand those thoughts, feelings, perceptions and subjective processing systems that lead to predatory behavior that is antithetical to contemporary understandings of human behavior. Dark Psychology assumes that criminal, deviant and abusive behaviors are purposive and have some rational, goal-oriented motivation 99% of the time. It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Adlerian theory and the Teleological Approach. Dark Psychology postulates there is a region within the human psyche that enables some people to commit atrocious acts without purpose. In this theory, it has been coined the Dark Singularity.

sociopathy-ipredator-dark-psychology-michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-forensic-psychology-ipredator-inc.

Dark Psychology posits that all humans have a reservoir of malevolent intent towards others ranging from minimally obtrusive and fleeting thoughts to pure psychopathic deviant behaviors without any cohesive rationality. This is called the Dark Continuum. Mitigating factors acting as accelerators and/or attractants to approaching the Dark Singularity, and where a person’s heinous actions fall on the Dark Continuum, is what Dark Psychology calls Dark Factor.

Criminal, Deviant & Cybercriminal Minds

Dark Psychology encompasses all that makes us who we are in relationship to our dark side. All cultures, all faiths and all humanity have this proverbial cancer. From the moment we are born to the time of death, there is a side hidden within us that some have called evil and others have defined as criminal, deviant or psychopathic. Dark Psychology introduces a third philosophical construct that views these behaviors different from religious dogmas and contemporary social science theories.

Dark Psychology assumes there are people who commit these same acts and do so not for power, money, sex, retribution or any other known purpose. They commit horrid acts without a goal. Simplified, their ends do not justify their means. There are people who violate and injure others for the sake of doing so. Within in all of us is this potential. A potential to harm others without cause, explanation, or purpose is the area Dr. Nuccitelli explores. Dark Psychology assumes this dark potential is incredibly complex and even more difficult to define.

sociopathy-ipredator-dark-psychology-michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-forensic-psychology-ipredator-inc.

Psychopath, Psychopathic & Dark Psychology

Dark Psychology posits we all have the capacity for predator behaviors and this potential has access to our thoughts, feelings and perceptions. We all have this potential, but only a few of us acts upon them. All of us have had thoughts and feelings at one time or another of wanting to behave in a brutal and violent manner. We all have had thoughts of wanting to hurt others severely without mercy. If you are honest with yourself, you will have to agree having had thoughts and feeling of wanting to commit heinous acts. Dark Psychology, similar to Criminal Psychology, attempts to examine these intrapsychic chasms of darkness.

“Pathological human narcissism transforms the actions of deceit, denial & misrepresentation into a reliable set of tools for those seeking to hide their indiscretions.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D., C.F.C. iPredator Inc. (2013)

Sociopathy, Sociopathic & Malignant Sociopathy

Malignant Sociopathy: A sub-tenet of Dark Psychology, Malignant Sociopathy is defined as a rare and extreme form of classic sociopathy, does not suffer from an acute psychiatric mental illness, is predominantly driven by the need for absolute power and control and views the enslavement of their victim(s) as a priori as opposed to taking their life, engaging in sexual and/or violent victimization, stealing their valuables or causing them psychological distress.

The current accepted definition of sociopathy is a personality disordered person that exhibits patterned behavior similar Antisocial Personality Disorder, often criminal or deviant, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience, lacks the ability to establish meaningful personal relationships, extremely egocentric and narcissistic and frequently engages in fantasizing about wanting to victimize, torture and enslave a targeted victim(s). Malignant Sociopathy is the severe form of the classic sociopathy with minor, but significant variations.

iPredator

iPredator: A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT. Central to the construct is the premise that Information Age criminals, deviants and the violently disturbed are psychopathological classifications new to humanity.

Whether the offender is a cyberbully, cyberstalker, cyber harasser, internet troll, cybercriminal, online sexual predator, cyber terrorist, online child pornography consumer and distributor or engaged in internet defamation or nefarious online deception, they fall within the scope of iPredator. The three criteria used to define an iPredator include:

  • A self-awareness of causing harm to others, directly or indirectly, using ICT.
  • The usage of ICT to obtain, tamper with, exchange and deliver harmful information.
  • A general understanding of Cyberstealth used to engage in criminal or deviant activities or to profile, identify, locate, stalk and engage a target.

Unlike human predators prior to the Information Age, iPredators include the multitude of benefits offered by Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. These assistances include exchange of information over long distances, rapidity of information exchanged and the seemingly infinite access to data available. Malevolent in intent, iPredators rely on their capacity to deceive others using ICT in the abstract and artificial electronic universe known as cyberspace. Therefore, as the internet naturally offers all ICT users anonymity, if they decide, iPredators actively design online profiles and diversionary tactics to remain undetected and untraceable.

Cyberstealth, a sub-tenet of iPredator, is a covert method by which iPredators attempt to establish and sustain complete anonymity while they engage in ICT activities planning their next assault, investigating innovative surveillance technologies or researching the social profiles of their next target. Concurrent with the concept of Cyberstealth is iPredator Victim Intuition [IVI]. An iPredator’s IVI is their aptitude to sense a target’s ODDOR [Offline Distress Dictates Online Response], online & offline vulnerabilities, psychological weaknesses, technological limitations, increasing their success of a cyber-attack with minimal ramifications.

Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. Discusses Cleveland Kidnapper

The Dark Psychology of the Cleveland missing women found news has shocked the nation. New York State licensed psychologist, forensic psychology consultant and founder of iPredator Inc., announces his availability to discuss the profiles and motivations of the Cleveland kidnapping suspect.

On May 6, 2013, the Dark Psychology of the Cleveland kidnapping suspect and missing women found news shocked America. Three young women and a child were reunited with their family after being held captive for over a decade by a Cleveland, Ohio man. New York State licensed psychologist, forensic psychology consultant and author of the Information Age Forensics construct, iPredator, announces his availability to discuss the profile and motivations of the alleged kidnapper. Dr. Nuccitelli is available to discuss the kidnapping suspect, Ariel Castro and criteria for the dangerous disorder known as sociopathy.

Given the news hitting the nation is a mere 36-48 hours, Dr. Nuccitelli has compiled data relevant to profiling a sociopath that does not require an extensive forensic evaluation. Assuming reports are correct that the three young women were held captive for a decade, Dr. Nuccitelli has compiled information about the assailants that are highly probable. His general bullet list outline is as follows:

Dark Psychology

Dark Psychology: Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of people to prey upon other people motivated by criminal and/or deviant drives that lack purpose and general assumptions of instinctual drives and social sciences theory.

It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Adlerian theory and Teleology. Dark Psychology encompasses all that makes us who we are in relationship to our dark side. All cultures, faiths and humanity have this proverbial cancer. From the moment we are born to the time of death, there is a side hidden within us that some have called “Evil” and others have defined as criminal, deviant or psychopathic.

Dark Psychology posits there are people who commit these same acts and do so not for power, money, sex, retribution or any other known purpose. They commit horrid acts without a goal. Simplified, their ends do not justify their means. There are people who violate and injure others for the sake of doing so. Within in all of us is this potential. A potential to harm others without cause, explanation, or purpose is the area explored. Dark Psychology assumes this dark potential is incredibly complex and even more difficult to define.

Narcissism, Narcissistic Personality Disorder & Steroids

“a brief snapshot of a highly successful athlete admitting steroid usage”

Given the recent national news of Lance Armstrong disclosing he has previously used anabolic steroids, the nation seems to be split in accusing him of being a pathological liar and narcissist or an athlete who made a mistake and should be forgiven being a cancer survivor. What has been frequently discussed, by those following his story, is his multitude of television and media appearances over the years where he convincingly and calmly stated he had never used anabolic steroids. For those who look at Mr. Armstrong as a hypocrite & pathetic liar, his calm demeanor during his past press conferences are the examples they use to illustrate he is a nefarious character.

“Anabolic Steroid” is the term used to describe a group of pharmaceutical medications similar to the male sex hormone testosterone. Anabolic steroids are legal to prescribe legally by doctors to treat medical conditions resulting from hormone deficiency and diseases like cancer and A.I.D.S. that cause depletion of muscle mass. Not legal is the use of anabolic steroids by athletes to enhance and/or improve their athletic performance that is not prescribed by a physician for a known medical condition.

According to Merriam–Webster, an Encyclopedia Britannica Company, Narcissism is defined as egoism, egocentrism, love of, or sexual desire for one’s own body. The term, Narcissism, dates back to antiquity and has its origins in the ancient Greek mythological story of Narcissus. In the fable, Narcissus was a very handsome young man and inadvertently became entranced with his own reflection mirrored by a pool of water while he bent down to obtain a drink of water.

Historians report Narcissus then died thereafter either by committing suicide realizing he could not be the object of his own desire, died heartbroken not being able to fall in love with the reflection of his own image or died by drowning from accidently falling into the pool of water fixated by his beauty. Although the motivations leading to his demise vary, all conclude with his death being driven by his obsessed fixation with his image.

Over the millennia, the term of Narcissism has defined many states and variations of self-absorption and egocentrism ranging from a beneficial & adaptive healthy state of self-love to a psychopathological mental illness causing the sufferer tremendous distress and problems in their successfully functioning. From a psychiatric standpoint, the DSM-IV-TR outlines an Axis II personality disorder called Narcissistic Personality Disorder(NPD.) Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is categorized by the American Psychiatric Association & American Medical Association as a mental illness.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) defines personality disorders as personality traits and behaviors that are driven by deeply ingrained ways of thinking combined with behaviors that are inflexible and generally lead to impaired relationships with loved ones, friends, coworkers and classmates.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) has been defined as a chronic pattern of grandiosity, a lack of empathy and an obsessive need for recognition. People with NPD perceive they are extremely important to everyone within their social spheres. People with NPD are often described as being pretentious, cocky, arrogant, patronizing, disdainful and pompous.

In laypeople terms, someone with this disorder may be described simply as a “narcissist” or as someone with “narcissism.” Both of these terms generally refer to someone with narcissistic personality disorder. Based on the severity of NPD, the dysfunction to the sufferer’s life and associates can range from minimal negative impact to devastating and highly destructive.

Not having evaluated Lance Armstrong and knowing very little about his childhood, family dynamics, past self-destructive behaviors, past harmful behaviors towards others, this writer does not have an opinion. Not having any demographic or psychological information to formulate a diagnostic impression, this writer can only conclude, by observing his deceptive talents, that he has practiced the art of deception for many years to be as talented as he presents on media.

“Pathological human narcissism transforms the actions of deceit, denial & misrepresentation into a reliable set of tools for those seeking to hide their indiscretions.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2013)

“The Information Age technocentric concept of being “connected” is a paradox of disconnection causing us to lose control of our instinctual drives for social cohesion, allegiance and selflessness. As our dependency upon Information and Communications Technology (ICT) grows, spreading throughout our collective human consciousness, the less we care for our neighbors and the more we delude ourselves into thinking that online connections are far more valuable than reality based relationships.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. (2014)
